The short version
Beat is a private atlas for water you fish deeply. The point of the product is that your hardest-won knowledge stays yours, so the privacy rules are not a courtesy bolted on at the end: everything you record in Beat is readable only by your own account, enforced on our servers rather than by our good intentions.
We do not track you, we run no advertising, we have no third-party analytics watching you inside the app, and we do not sell or rent anything about you to anyone. There is no business model here that depends on your data leaving your account.
Who we are
Beat is made by Beat Fly Fishing LLC, a Washington limited liability company. We are the data controller for the information described here. Reach us any time at hello@beatflyfishing.com.
Your account
You sign in with Apple or Google. We never see or store a password. From that sign-in we receive and keep:
- your email address, used to identify your account and to send you messages you have asked for, such as a Member Card claim or a guide claim code;
- your display name, shown on beats you choose to publish;
- a provider user ID, the stable identifier that lets you sign back in to the same atlas.
If you use Sign in with Appleand choose Hide My Email, we only ever receive Apple’s relay address, and that is fine: everything in Beat works normally. We will never ask you to reveal your real address.
Your atlas, and what private means here
The water you save, the catches you log, the flies in your box, your notes and your seasons are all written to a private area belonging to your account. Our database rules permit a read only when the requesting account is the owner of that record. Another Beat user cannot read it, and it is not pooled into anything shared.
Two deliberate exceptions, both of which are things you actively do rather than things that happen to you:
- A beat you publish. Publishing is how the marketplace works, so a published beat and the display name on it are visible to others. What you keep unpublished stays private.
- A river you propose. If you propose water be added to the shared atlas, that proposal is reviewed by us, because it is a request to change something everyone sees.
Location
Beat asks for your location so it can show where you are on the map and surface the water nearest you. That live position is used on your device to draw the map and sort what is close; we do not keep a history of where you have been, and we do not track you in the background.
The coordinates you deliberately save (the water you add, the spot attached to a logged catch) are stored, because those are your atlas. They follow the same owner-only rule as everything else.
You can refuse or revoke the location permission in iOS Settings at any time. The map still works; it simply will not know where you are standing.
Photos and the fly scanner
Two different paths, and the difference is worth stating plainly.
Catch photos you attach to a logged fish are uploaded and stored in your private area so they are there on your other devices and next season. Owner-only, like the rest of your atlas.
The fly scannerfirst tries to read the image entirely on your phone, using Apple’s on-device text recognition. If your fly came in a labelled package, that usually settles it and the photo never leaves the device. If that fails to produce a confident answer, the image is sent to Google’s Gemini model through our Google Cloud project to identify the pattern. It is used to answer that one question and is not added to your atlas or kept by us as a photo library. We would rather tell you this than let you assume the camera is always offline.
Buying and selling
Payments run through Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe directly: we never receive or store a card number. We keep a record of what you bought so your library stays yours, and, if you sell, the Stripe account status we need to pay you.
A purchase through Apple’s in-app purchase instead runs through Apple, under Apple’s own privacy terms, and we receive confirmation of the entitlement rather than your payment details.
Selling on Beat may make us obliged to report your earnings to tax authorities, and to collect the identity information required to do that. That is a legal obligation, not a choice we are making about your data.
Companies that process data for us
We use a small number of vendors to run Beat. They act on our instructions and are not free to use your information for their own purposes:
- Google (Firebase for authentication, database and file storage; Google Cloud for the Gemini model used by the fly scanner)
- Stripe (payments and seller payouts)
- Mapbox (the map itself)
- Resend (the transactional emails we send you)
- Apple (sign-in, and in-app purchases where used)
What we do not do
- We do not track you across other apps or websites. Beat’s privacy manifest declares no tracking, which is a commitment Apple holds us to.
- We do not sell, rent or trade your information.
- We do not run advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles.
- We do not embed third-party analytics or marketing SDKs to watch what you do inside the app.
How long we keep things
Your atlas stays as long as your account does. That is the promise of the product; a journal that quietly forgot last season would be useless. Delete a record and we delete it. Delete your account and we delete your atlas, except where we are legally required to retain a transaction record, which is ordinarily the case for financial records.
Your control
- See it. Your atlas is what the app shows you; ask us if you want it in a portable form.
- Correct it. Everything you entered is editable in the app.
- Delete it. Delete individual records, or your whole account, from the app. Write to us if you would rather we did it.
- Withdraw a permission. Location and camera access are revocable in iOS Settings without losing your atlas.
Depending on where you live you may have further rights: access, portability, deletion, objection, or the right to complain to a data protection authority. Write to us and we will honour them; we are not going to make you prove you live somewhere with good laws.
Children
Beat is not designed for children and is not directed at anyone under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from a child under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Where your data is held
Beat’s infrastructure runs in the United States. If you use Beat from elsewhere, your information is transferred to and processed in the US under the terms of this policy.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and if a change materially affects what we do with your information we will tell you in the app rather than hoping you re-read the page.
